Pakistani actress Veena Malik faces 26-year prison sentence for 'blasphemy'

A Pakistani court sentenced an actress and her husband, the chief executive of the country's largest media group, a television anchor person and a morning show producer for 26 years after a broadcast showed people dancing to a song about the wedding of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad's daughter.

Actress Veena Malik her husband Asad Bashir Khan took part in the television morning show wedding ceremony in which a religious song was played over their act. Continue after the cut.
The channel's owner, Mir Shakeelur Rehman, the host of the morning show and two guests were also fined 16,600 US dollars and ordered to surrender their passports and sell their properties.

The court in Gilgit and Baltistan sentenced Rehman on Tuesday over the broadcast earlier this year.

The channel faced a number of blasphemy complaints about the show, and the charges were brought soon after the station publicly blamed the shooting of one of their top journalists on the military's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency. The army denied the accusation.
